At the Peel board, we recognize the contributions that employees make to the success and future of our organization. We care about our employees and believe that supporting wellness initiatives is a sound investment.
We have developed a number of programs designed to promote a healthy work/life balance and to assist employees with health issues.

Mind, Body, Stress Connection
Live life with more energy, more fun and less pain! Controlling stress and making it a positive force in your life requires understanding the connection between your thoughts, your body and the stressors in your life. This stress management workshop will increase your understanding of stress and the impact it has on you. Your goal? To develop a personalized toolbox of skills for living a healthier, more enjoyable life.

Self Esteem and Assertiveness Training-Workshop
Confidence and a positive attitude lead to success in work, in relationships and in life. This workshop is an opportunity to enhance your self esteem and to the skills for assertive living.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The EAP helps you deal with stresses that may affect your personal well-being and interfere with your work performance.
Features of EAP:
- a confidential assessment, short-term counselling and/or referral service provided at no cost to all Peel board employees and their immediate families
- available 12 months a year on a voluntary basis
- provides access to an advisor who can help you identify and resolve your problems
- addresses issues resulting from marital problems, health and emotional difficulties, family conflict, grief issues, career decisions, financial difficulties, substance misuse and work-related concerns
- provides access to a wide range of community services and professional resources to help meet your needs
- guarantees complete privacy – personal issues and participant identities are held in strictest confidence

EAP – Colleagues on Leave Connecting
Colleagues On Leave Connecting is an information/support group for employees who are away from work, either on sick leave or long-term disability. It is an extension of the EAP program. Currently, the group meets twice a month at the EAP office in Mississauga

Communication, Assistance, Return to Work and Encouragement (CARE)
CARE is a program developed to help Peel board employees deal with a debilitating illness or injury. The CARE program encourages employees to focus on the goal of returning to work.
Features of CARE:
- offers support to employees who are returning to work after a prolonged absence or serious medical condition
- provides assistance with emotional, physical and social issues leading up to, during and after employees return to work
- encourages regular contact between employees and their schools/worksites, during the time they are away from work
- helps employees and their supervisors/principals understand their shared roles and responsibilities during the employee’s work absence

ERGOKIT
People who work at computers often experience vision problems, repetitive stress injuries or muscle fatigue. The ERGOKIT is an evaluation and training program that helps you to work more comfortably and productively at your computer. The kit includes an evaluation booklet, measuring tool and computer screen hood.

Employment Leaves
The Peel board recognizes that employees need time away from work to successfully balance the demands of work and lifestyle. We provide a generous vacation package and offer various options for leaves of absence packages, including:
- sick leave
- pregnancy/adoption/parenting leave
- leave without loss of pay or cumulative sick leave – available for death, funeral, family illness, holy days, court appearances and other occasional work absences
- leave due to family responsibilities
- unpaid leave
- employee funded leave
- short-term professional development leave
- leave to assume responsibilities with outside organizations

The National Wellness Survey Report 2000 confirmed that workplace wellness is becoming increasingly important to the Canadian business community:
- 17.5% of companies surveyed are offering comprehensive wellness programs
- 64% are offering some type of wellness initiatives
The two most common reasons that companies give for supporting workplace wellness are:
- 27.3% consider healthy employees a valuable asset
- 25.6% want to promote a healthy lifestyle

An Ounce of Prevention….!
In the North American workplace, the majority of illnesses and injuries fall into 6 main disease categories:
- Cardiovascular – heart disease, angina, arteriosclerosis
- Muskuloskeletal – back disorders, repetitive strain injuries, sprains, dislocations
- Respiratory - pneumonia, sinusitis, viral infections, bronchitis
- Digestive – ulcers, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome
- Cancer
- Stress – headache, anxiety reactions, insomnia, gastric disorders
All of these medical conditions can be prevented or the level of risk reduced through physical activity and other lifestyle changes!
